The reason we normally avoid talking about individuals is because that thinking is usually related to showing off, to claiming protagonism and getting into the spotlight.
But there is a positive side about each one of us being our own special part of a group:
1/ We don't all need to be superstars: Being someone special doesn't need to mean you are the most valued player, smartest in the class, etc. It might be that you have something else that the superstars don't and it is just the right spark that helps balance the team.
2/ Let's not have two of the same: Einstein uded to say, "same processes, same results". If you want the team to evolve you need to incorporate people that think differently.
3/ Leadership comes in different ways: I was really happy to learn a couple of weeks ago that the NBA has decided to create a whole new award to recognize teammate spirit. Because sometimes, the top scorer doesn't need to be the most valued piece of the team.
4/ Different tasks, different people: The complexity of the job that needs to be done, must be reflexed in the people taking over each task. After all a business developer, a customer relationships assistant and a secretary's daily tasks demand of rather different abilities, although for a better common outcome they should all share some values.
